The landscape, from here, is pretty bleak. I won’t lie to you, this isn’t for everybody. But yet here you are. So let us start…
The Path Begins
“Do not embark on a quest for enlightenment unless you have the same amount of desire as a drowning man has to breathe air.”
This ancient wisdom sets the tone for our journey.
Alchemy, at its core, is a process of inner transformation – the science of spiritual evolution. While this definition may seem inadequate now, it will naturally evolve as we progress through different levels of understanding.
The Alchemist’s Power
The power of the Alchemist outlined here is deeply personal. If you seek self-transformation, whatever that means to you, this path beckons. This power manifests subtly, liberating one from sources of suffering. Through understanding our true nature, the alchemist loses fear of death, and through this liberation, most other fears dissolve.
The alchemical path isn’t unique. Rather, it offers a systematic approach to unraveling the complexities of being that plague the ordinary person. Think of it as a hidden doorway – those who discover it can free themselves from their mental prison of existence.
Alchemists share company with Buddhists, Gnostics, Sufis, and other mystics who have learned to access the underlying code of being itself, uncoupling the natural but painful attachment to it. This concept finds beautiful expression in The Matrix films, which offer a powerful metaphor for breaking free from mental imprisonment.
The Nature of the Work
Rather than reinventing ancient wisdom, we’ll draw upon terms from mystery traditions like Kabbalah, Buddhism, and Gnostic Christianity, making deeper research accessible to interested seekers.
Suffering often serves as a catalyst for the alchemical journey. While initial progress is possible without it, eventually you must be willing to release everything that defines you. Without risking everything, you cannot make the leap of faith required to “know the unknown.”
Take heart – there’s no rush. If you find yourself “stuck” at any stage, continue reading, but recognize that comprehension might become more challenging. This work is primarily internal and compatible with modern life – you need not become a solitary monk. However, as a spiritual path, it naturally leads to some disinterest in mundane concerns.
Understanding Reality
Reality is subjective – but what does this mean? Reality is your unique experience of existence, filtered through your conditioning. We each inhabit our own subjective realities, connecting through language and numbers to construct a mutually-agreed “objective reality.”
Science strives to eliminate subjective bias, seeking to observe objective reality through standardized measurements. Yet this “objective” reality is ultimately conventional – a consensus of agreement. When individuals have unconventional experiences, their “abnormality” is judged against this consensual “normality.”
We emerge into self-awareness without understanding how or what has occurred. We are processes that think we’re things, creating confusion as we fixate on static entities rather than dynamic flows. Our true subjective reality remains chaotic and ever-shifting, while our constructed reality of things and beings provides stability and apparent sense.
The Alchemical Process
The Alchemist progresses through distinct stages representing fundamental shifts in their mechanism of being. While this journey carries certain psychological risks, those drawn to alchemy often already experience degrees of existential questioning or depression.
These transmutations – changes in our essential substance – generally bring benefit, though they can be troublesome if misunderstood. They are irreversible: once you glimpse a deeper truth, you cannot un-know it.
At each stage, curiosity mingles with faith to birth wisdom. This manifests as growing confidence in one’s progress and understanding, igniting an inner fire. This fire fuels an internal obsession with uncovering truth, often shifting life priorities while remaining compatible with daily existence.
Take your time. Learn to ponder and use whatever resources you have to deepen your understanding. These processes unfold gradually, and developing patience becomes a natural byproduct of learning. Rest assured, there will always be plenty to satisfy your curiosity.

The article you’ve just read is based on a chapter from “Nigredo,” the first volume in Dr. Simon Robinson’s groundbreaking series “A Course in Modern Alchemy.” This thoughtful and deeply personal exploration of spiritual transformation draws from ancient wisdom while making it accessible for the modern seeker.
In Nigredo, Dr. Robinson masterfully weaves together concepts from Buddhist philosophy, Western alchemy, and psychological insight to illuminate the first stage of the alchemical journey. The book guides readers through understanding the landscape of spiritual transformation, exploring concepts like the Fisher King Wound, the nature of reality itself, and the critical process of confronting one’s own shadow. What makes this work particularly valuable is how it bridges the gap between ancient alchemical symbolism and contemporary spiritual development.
The text serves as both a practical manual and a philosophical guide, offering readers a structured approach to inner transformation while acknowledging the deeply personal nature of this journey. Robinson’s unique perspective as both a spiritual seeker and academic brings clarity to complex concepts like the Dark Night of the Soul, the Rebis, and the seed of Nirvana, making them relevant and applicable to modern life.
